Eight sites. Eight studios. A single technical specification.
The Octave is a single commission, awarded across eight architectural practices. Each studio is given one site, one brief, one budget, and the same materials catalogue. The plans are drawn independently. The houses are built in sequence.
A standing material specification, hand-finished on site.
"The brief is identical. The sites are not. The houses, therefore, are eight different answers to the same question."
The shared specification dictates a 1,000 m² envelope, a 30-metre cantilevered terrace, structural walls in unfilled travertine, exterior cladding in oxidised bronze, and joinery in untreated French oak (Bourgogne, log-cut). All other decisions — plan, elevation, fenestration, interior — are left to the architect of record.
Sites range from a 4,800 m² limestone plateau on Cap-Ferrat to a 2,200 m² calanque parcel above Cassis. No two residences share an aspect, an elevation, or an axis. The commissioning brief was issued in May 2022. The first house, OCT · 01, was delivered in late 2024.
